I’ve read a lot of books on behavior change. So it’s hard for me to evaluate whether Katy Milkman’s How To Change is wonderful or repetitive to someone who might be reading their first. It’s certainly well-written and the advice is consistent, actionable, and evidence-based.
As with so many other books or resources, my belief is that it’s less important to pick the BEST book. Instead, spend 10-15 minutes surveying the field, then just pick one that’s credible, written in a way that works for you, and to get started.
I decided it was time to get back to discipline and routine after the dissipation of the summer. A good old paper chart, hung in the kitchen, does amazing things for my behavior. Have I done what I intend to do? Do I really want that drink, or that treat? It’s a little embarrassing how well it works for me.
(I’ve also found success using Streaks, an iPhone app.)
And I pay for coaching and accountability from a human I respect and am a little intimidated by, when I’m really trying to make progress toward a sustainable, meaningful change.
