2 Helpful Resources on Negotiation

I was helping a client think through a potential offer earlier this month and get prepared to negotiate.  Negotiating a job offer is one of the things that makes a lot of people nervous.  I love to help people plan their strategy so they feel more confident.

For a number of years I ran negotiation workshops for students, so there was a time when I read and evaluated a lot of resources.  My favorite resource around negotiation is Margaret Neale, a Stanford Business School professor (now emerita). In case it might be useful to you, here are three ways to become smarter and better prepared for a negotiation.

1) This 24 minute video will give you a thorough overview — including the strategies that are most effective for women negotiators (who are penalized for using approaches that men can use without fear of penalty).  I know a 24 minute video is long, but the whole thing is good, and is better than any of the shorter videos I’ve reviewed.  It will set you up to plan thoughtfully for negotiations you know will matter.

2) I have a 2 page prep worksheet, adapted from Margaret Neale’s strategies, that can help you get clear and ready.  Email me if you’d like it!

3)This book is very good, but probably overkill unless you’re embarking on a career where you are likely to negotiate frequently, and want a deep dive into frameworks and strategies to employ in different scenarios.

If you have other negotiation resources you like, I’d love to hear about them.
