I forwarded a job along to someone and she wrote back excitedly about the description. As a threshhold matter, she wondered whether it would pay enough.
It’s hard to figure out what something might pay, if you’re not looking at a posting at an organization subject to salary transparency laws.
O*Net Online is a good resource, although in my experience the salary bands there are on the low side, especially for more senior-level jobs. Glassdoor and Payscale are well-known, but of such dubious value I’m not linking to them here. Gossip and inside information is a great source, of course, but there are a lot of norms and taboos about talking about money, so that can feel like an intimidating topic to bring up.
There’s a career coach whose writing and thinking I admire a great deal, Sarah Johnston, and she’s created a great guide to lesser-known salary information sources. I would never have thought of the H-1 B Visa database, and it’s genius. I hope you find it as helpful as I did.
