A Bad Idea

A Bad Idea

I got an invitation from someone on LinkedIn who has created an AI bot that promises to “find and apply to jobs on your behalf, 24/7.”

This sounds like exactly the wrong approach.

But I have a horrified fascination and curiosity about it.  I don’t want an AI using my identity in the actual real world, where its representations on my behalf can damage my reputation.  Who wants to entrust such interactions to a stranger and their unspecified AI prompts?  I’m tempted to give it a pseudonym and watch what happens.

I think a lot about the parts of this work that can be made better and faster with AI, and the parts that an AI is likely to botch.  I’m rooting for anyone who’s building tools to make job hunting less awful, but my instincts tell me this selling point solves the wrong problem.  Increasing the volume of low-quality applications isn’t the ticket to success.  Still, I’m talking myself into writing back to the builder to learn what assumptions they’re bringing into their model.
