Here’s a quotation I like a lot:
It’s very easy to be impressed by people when you don’t see their lives. Being inspired by someone when you see the full cross-section of their existence is rare and lovely. – Emily Sundberg
If you are questioning your career, but aren’t sure yet what you’d like to do instead, I invite you to think about inspiration, admiration, and even envy. You can start with the colleagues further ahead of you in your organization or industry. Look at their work life but also “the full cross-section of their existence,” as best as you can. Notice what you feel.
Look at your neighbors, your friends, your classmates from college or graduate school. This is hard, because we only see fragments on social media. But whose “cross-section” looks good to you? Who makes you feel curious, or calm? Where do you see glimmers of a kind of satisfaction that will nourish you?
I’d love to know. And to help you begin to discover how to get there.
